Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that regenerates the jaw bone using the patient’s bone or a bone from a tissue bank to correct jaw bone damage. Jaw bone damage can be caused by periodontal disease or tooth loss. The jaw bone relies on the pressure of the teeth to stimulate bone regeneration. When tooth loss occurs, the jaw bone will no longer regenerate, and the bone will deteriorate.
The bone grafting treatment is performed to protect existing teeth and tissue. Bone grafting can improve oral health, function, and appearance. Dr. Baradaran utilizes bone grafting to rebuild the bone and restore the gum line to support a restoration or dental implant.
Bone grafting procedures are performed with local anesthetics. The dentist will begin the procedure by removing the bone from the donor site. If the patient does not have enough bone, a graft will be taken from a tissue bank. If the dentist is performing an extraction, the graft will be placed using the incision left from the extraction. For a dental implant procedure, the dentist would place the bone graft alongside the implant. If the graft is being performed for another procedure, the dentist will make an incision in the area of concern and carefully place the bone graft.
Patients can visit Dr. Baradaran for a comprehensive consultation. The dentist will perform an oral exam and review the patient's dental history to determine if the patient is a candidate for a bone graft or gum graft. The dentist may also take x-rays to examine any areas of concern.
It is crucial for patients to schedule routine dental cleanings to identify early signs of periodontal disease.
Gum grafting can reduce tooth sensitivity, improve the appearance of the smile, and protects the tooth from decay.
Bone grafting can strengthen the jaw bone to treat tooth loss.
