Porcelain Veneers Q & A

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells, custom-made to protect teeth and cover the front surfaces. They are crafted from thin layers of either porcelain and tinted to match the surrounding teeth to provide a natural appearance. Porcelain veneers are popular cosmetic dental treatments because they are extremely durable and look very appealing. Porcelain veneers are used to:

  • Correct teeth which look short or uneven with neighboring teeth
  • Cover stains that cannot be treated with teeth whitening processes
  • Even out tooth edges
  • Hide gaps and pits
  • Make teeth look straighter
  • Restore chips and cracks

How are porcelain veneers applied?

Before veneers are installed, the patient’s teeth are thoroughly cleaned with all traces of plaque or tartar removed. The dentist then removes a thin layer of the enamel from the surfaces of the teeth to receive the veneer. This makes room for the veneer to ensure that it lies flush against and even with the surrounding teeth. The dentist takes impressions of the teeth which will receive the veneer. This impression is provided to the dental laboratory where fabrication takes place to ensure the veneer fits precisely to the patient’s teeth. While waiting for the permanent veneer, the patient will wear a temporary veneer to protect the teeth. The patient will return for a second appointment for installation of the permanent veneer. The dentist will use a strong dental adhesive to attach the permanent veneer. The porcelain is then smoothed and polished which helps it to look like a natural tooth.

What are the benefits of dental veneers?

There are a variety of benefits associated with veneers. First, they look like natural teeth and provide a healthy and natural looking smile. Also, there is no need for surgery and the recovery time is minimal. An additional benefit is that veneers are also made from a stain-resistant material, which helps them remain white and bright, even if when consuming a favorite beverage like a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.
